DOVER is a city in Strafford County, settled in 1623 at Hilton Point by brothers William and Edward Hilton from London England. It was called Wecohamet by native Abenaki Indians. Dover is the oldest permanent settlement in New Hampshire. Hilton Park is located between the Cochecho and Bellamy Rivers meets the Piscataqua River. The name was changed in 1637 to Dover by the new governor. The Falls of the Cochecho River helped bring the Industrial Revolution to the 19th century. Dover was incorporated in 1855. Dover was a national leader in textiles. During the Great Depression textile mills no longer were dependent on New England water power and moved to southern states and the mills went out of business.
Downtown Dover area reflects the city’s mill heritage and the Cochecho River runs through the downtown shops, restaurants and businesses.
